The Last Rite leans on sleep paralysis and night-time helplessness to build its scares, using that trapped, can't-move feeling as its main source of dread rather than constant jolts. Most of the fear comes from a sense of something unwanted creeping into the main character's body and mind, so it stays more unsettling than gory. It's a low-budget indie possession story, so pacing can feel uneven, but when it works it taps into a very real, common fear of being awake but paralyzed with something in the room.
