A disease carried by common cockroaches is killing Manhattan children. In an effort to stop the epidemic an entomologist, Susan Tyler, creates a mutant breed of insect that secretes a fluid to kill the roaches. This mutant breed was engineered to die after one generation, but three years later Susan finds out that the species has survived and evolved into a large, gruesome monster that can mimic human form.

How Mimic scares
There's a damp, claustrophobic dread to this one, with dark tunnels and flickering light doing a lot of the work before anything even shows up. Del Toro leans more on mood, shadows, and slow reveals than cheap jolts, though there are a few good jump moments once the creatures are on the hunt. The danger feels physical and immediate once it kicks in, with characters being chased and cornered in tight spaces, but the movie also lingers on unease and the wrongness of what's living underneath the city. It's a solid pick if you like monster movies with some brains and atmosphere, not just gore for its own sake.
